What is a life?
It is time; a series of moments. Each moment contains an experience. Sometimes a feeling. Sometimes actions. Sometimes choices. Sometimes sensations.
What about the stuff that happens to us? Doesn’t that stuff comprise life too?
Obviously.
There are things that just happen to us—without our input. I think that’s one reason why childhood is so impactful: no control. As children we are at the mercy of the world. Our early experiences are an accident of birth.
On one hand, it could accurately be stated that a life is the sum total of a person’s moments. But, in reality, all moments are not equal. The “now” moment matters a lot. In fact, it matters the most.
Uneventful moments only matter while you’re in them. Then, quickly, they tend to be forgotten. Traumatic moments are not forgotten. But for a moment, they can be.
Changing your life then, means changing your moments.
The sensations they contain.
The feelings they contain.
The actions they contain.
This is all we can do — yet, it’s enough.
